Do you know what today is? Why it’s National Oatmeal Day, of course! And what will we be doing at the Oldways and Whole Grains Council Office to celebrate, you ask? Eating some deliciously nutritious oatmeal!

Full disclosure: I do this every day. Oatmeal is a pretty common breakfast around these parts; it’s not a normal day at the office unless one of us is heating up steaming bowls of the hearty grain and mixing in whatever concoction we can conceive of. While I’m a strictly rolled oats with blueberries kind of girl July through August when the delicious little berry is at its best, the rest of the year I like to experiment with peanut butter, bananas, dried fruit, nuts and every once in a while, something savory like cheese. Oh yeah, I’m a wild woman!

If you’re sitting there asking yourself why oatmeal, day in and day out, I’ll tell you. Oatmeal is the perfect way to start your day because it’s packed full of fiber and antioxidants, it boosts your immune system (hello flu season!) and stabilizes blood sugar. This means that not only does it keep you feeling full longer and more balanced throughout the day, but it is also incredibly hearty and versatile. It warms me up on cold winter mornings and keeps me running through those long summer days. Oatmeal can be eaten any time of year, any time of day, in oh so many manners.

Have you tried oatmeal in a smoothie before? Jamba Juice has started adding ground oats to their smoothies and you can do it at home too! Simply out rolled oats in a food processor and grind them up for a hearty whole grain boost!

As I mentioned earlier, oatmeal is delicious with savory mix ins. A new oatmeal centric restaurant, Oat Meals, opened in New York last year, introducing innovative and delicious savory oatmeal dishes. Think additions like gruyere cheese, balsamic reduction, truffle oil and bacon just to name a few. Don’t have a fabulous oatmeal restaurant in your neighborhood? Check out this great oatmeal “risotto” recipe that you can whip up in your own kitchen. With options like this, it’s hard to imagine oatmeal as just a plain old breakfast food.

Oats are also a great alternative to bread crumbs and flours once they have been ground up in a food processor. They work wonders at binding recipe components together in things like burgers, and meatloaf and add a nutty, hearty crust when they’re used as a topping/coating.
