BOSTON, May 3, 2011—May is National Mediterranean Diet Month and to celebrate, Oldways (http://www.oldwayspt.org), a nonprofit in Boston that created the first Mediterranean Diet Pyramid in 1993, and its Mediterranean Foods Alliance is launching “Med in America.” This web-based journey through the United States offers a colorful state-by-state look at who is promoting this healthy eating pattern, and how they’re doing it.

“This journey was such a wonderful opportunity for Oldways to see how many people have followed our lead in offering classes, menus, or special lifestyle programs to promote the Mediterranean Diet,” said Sara Baer-Sinnott, President, Oldways. “Our Med in America map offers a snapshot of the people, places, and events we encountered along the way, all dedicated to helping others discover and enjoy the fabulous flavors and remarkable health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.”

Consumers can all thank the cultures and countries that surround the Mediterranean for giving us the delicious flavors, fresh traditional foods, and remarkable health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet. But today, whether you live in Alaska, Maine, or somewhere in-between, you don’t need to travel any further than your local supermarket to find everything you need to put Mediterranean-style meals on your table. “These 50 stories are just the tip of the ‘pyramid,’” said Georgia Orcutt, Program Manager for Oldways and the Mediterranean Foods Alliance. “As we launch this effort we look forward to, and encourage, others to share their own personal experiences of how the Mediterranean diet has influenced their life.”
