Croatia: History, Culture & Cuisine – TWO ROOMS LEFT!

Oldways’ first Culinaria to Croatia has a focus on Dubrovnik and Split – its history, culture and cuisine. We’re sure you will fall in love, as we have!

What You’ll Love about Your Week in Croatia

What You’ll Love about Your Week in Croatia

First of all, you will love Croatia. Secondly, (for most people) it will probably be the first time you’ve traveled in Croatia and experienced its history, culture, food and wine — and it is always wonderful to learn new things and have new adventures. Dubrovnik and Split are charming, with beautiful architecture, winding streets, all within view of the Adriatic Sea. We’ve chosen other places and people to visit that round out a start at understanding the foodways and culture of this beautiful country, and that will give you (at least) one of those pinch-me days – when you know you are so lucky to be where you are. We hope you will join us for another—in the words of Oldways’ founder Dun Gifford—Oldways trip of a lifetime!

The Croatia Culinaria awards 14 CPEUs in accordance with the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s CPEU Prior Approval Program.

Day by Day

Day 1

Sunday, October 27

Check in at the spectacular Bellevue Hotel in Dubrovnik, where everyone will have a room with a seaview.

We’ll get together for an early evening welcome at the hotel, where you’ll have a chance to meet your fellow travelers.  We’ll also enjoy a wine tasting before we have our welcome dinner at the Bellevue.

Day 2

Monday, October 28

Today we travel to Navarra to visit a small, traditional cheese producer. Following our tour and tasting, the family will host us at their home for a lunch of the region’s specialties including an extra special dessert using sheep’s milk. Upon returning to San Sebastian, you’ll have some free time to explore the city before we meet for a spectacular guided pintxos tour.

Day 3

Tuesday, October 29

In the morning we will head to Konalve, the region south of Dubrovnik rich in history, art, and cuisine. First, we will stop at a multi-generation family winery for a tasting of 3 wines, along with some cheeses and olives.  Next, we will drive 5 minutes south to visit a family run restaurant to learn about Peka, a traditional Croatian dish which literally translates to “cooking under the lid.” There we will enjoy lunch with regional wines and enjoy folklore musical entertainment. After free time in the afternoon, we will gather again for dinner at Pantarul Restaurant in Dubrovnik.

Day 4

Wednesday, October 30

We’ll check out of the Hotel Bellevue and drive north. En route, we will stop in Mali Ston for a special Oyster Experience. You’ll enjoy oysters fresh out of the water and a traditional mussels stew along with local beverages like Rakija. We’ll also learn about salt as Ston is a city of salt (it was a form of currency in the Middle Ages). After lunch and our salt and oyster experiences, we’ll continue driving to Split for check in at the Hotel Ambasador for a room with a view. You’ll be free in the evening to explore Split and its restaurants.

Day 5

Thursday, October 31

Today we will start with a walking food and cultural tour of Split.  We’ll have tastings at the Green Market and then go to a cheese shop for samplings of cheese. You’ll be free for lunch and in the early afternoon, and then we’ll gather in the late afternoon for a Hands-On Cooking Class and Dinner at the Split Cooking Class.

Day 6

Friday, November 01

We’ll be on the water today!  We’ll take a ferry to the island of Brač, where we’ll visit a Stone Masonry school, a monastery with Croatian Baroque art and an Olive Oil Museum, where we’ll have a tour, learn about the harvest and finish with a light lunch.  You’ll be free for dinner in Split.

Day 7

Saturday, November 02

For our last day, we’ll start at a special one of a kind place in Gata, where we’ll learn how to make Soparnik, a traditional Croatian dish – a swiss chard pie, cooked in a wood fire. We’ll also have tastings of local fruit liqueurs.  Then we’ll drive down the mountain to Omis, to take a river cruise up the Cetina River Canyon to a very special restaurant, Restoran Kaštil Slanica for a “Bread Under the Bell” demonstration and a spectacular Farewell Gala Lunch. After lunch, we’ll return to Split and you’ll be free to rest, shop, pack and enjoy the city before departure.

Day 8

Sunday, November 03

Departures or additional travel on own.
