“I like to say that in our travels, there are some days that are more special than others. I call them ‘pinch me’ days.”
-Sara Baer-Sinnott, Oldways President
When you venture outside the guidebooks, you never know exactly what will be in store. What will you experience when you step away from the crowds? These breathtaking travel moments are not quite as rare as you think-that is, if you know where to look. On an Oldways tour, you may find yourself sitting on a carpet in a Berber tent in Morocco, trying your hand at shaping orechiette pasta in Italy, or strolling through a pistachio orchard in Turkey. Here are the top five moments in Oldways travel history that would make you think: pinch me, I must be dreaming!
A surprise run-in with the goats who made your goat cheese.Â
A stumble into history in an Italian wine cellar. ““It’s great to be able to put the food into a cultural context and to see it in its natural home. There are often other unexpected bonuses, too. When my daughter and I did Piedmont we met people who remembered WWII and we saw things like escape tunnels built into wine cellars. Experiences like that make Oldways tours different from a ‘normal’Â tour,” said one traveler who joined Oldways in the Piedmont, Italy.
A journey by four-wheel-drive to a mountaintop Moroccan village (just in time for lunch in a Berber tent). From couscous and tagines to preserved lemons, from charmoula to sweet tomato jams and mint tea, we explored Moroccan cuisine, had lessons in Moroccan rugs and textiles, learned to bargain in maze-like souks, and more.
A meal prepared over open fire. “It’s hard to convey the magic,” wrote Oldways President Sara Baer-Sinnott of the cooking demonstration at Dounias taverna in Crete. “Before we ate lunch, [the owner] took us to see his olive trees, garden and to meet his two horses, perched on a terrace of the mountain. Then we all sat down at long tables to enjoy a Dounias-Oldways lunch, served with local wine in tin cups.”
