Honoring Our 2023 Black History Month Community Series

In 2023, Oldways celebrated Black History Month by honoring community knowledge and amplifying the voices of longtime African Heritage and Health program ambassadors through a month-long Community Series. Each week highlighted a different theme, centering food, culture, and education as powerful tools for health and connection.

Week one focused on heart health, with African Heritage and Health Ambassador Glorya Fernandez sharing insights into the heart-healthy benefits of African heritage ways of eating and how traditional foodways can support cardiovascular wellness.

In week two, the series turned to grocery shopping and everyday decision-making. Ambassador Angela Ledyard guided viewers through the grocery store, offering practical tips on reading nutrition labels, navigating food marketing, and making informed choices that align with the African Heritage Diet.

Cooking and recipes took center stage in week three, with Ambassador Tiffany Davis demonstrating how to prepare a delicious and nourishing smoothie inspired by African heritage ingredients and principles.

Week four explored research and science, featuring Chef Shirelle Boyd, who discussed the science behind cooking techniques and flavor development, alongside educator Elyce Lloyd, who shared insights from her work developing curriculum and educational resources that support culturally grounded nutrition education.

The month concluded with a webinar led by Dr. Samara Sterling and African Heritage and Health Ambassador Adante Hart, which examined how African heritage foods can play a vital role in addressing health disparities and advancing community health.

Together, this Community Series reflected the depth, diversity, and lived expertise of the African Heritage and Health community, honoring the past while continuing to build pathways toward a healthier future.
