Xiao Ou Shu, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D.

Associate Director for Global Health, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center

Dr. Xiao Ou Shu is an Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and the Associate Director for Global Health at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. She has over 30 years’ experience in investigating the role of environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, and host susceptibility in the etiology and prognosis of cancer and other chronic diseases.  Over the years, she has established several large resources for epidemiology research, including two population-based cohort studies: the Shanghai Men’s Health Study, a cohort of over 60,000 men; and the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study, a cohort of more than 5,000 breast cancer survivors. She also played a key role in launching and conducting the Shanghai Women’s Health Study, a population-based cohort study of 75,000 women.  Dr. Shu has authored or co-authored more than 790 research papers that have been published in peer-reviewed life science journals, many focusing on dietary intake and human health. She was recognized by Thomas Reuters as a “Highly Cited Researcher” in 2015 and 2016.
