This session from Ellen Karlin MMSc, RDN, LDN, FADA and Sara Karlin, DDS enables registered dietitians and nutrition professionals to understand the bi-directional relationship between diet and oral health. Emerging science has identified several key nutritional components which are essential for oral health promotion and oral disease prevention. Nutritional counseling in the dental office provides dental patients with the critical information they need to maintain healthy teeth and gums and prevent oral infectious diseases. Research shows us that cultural factors and lifestyle influence food choices and must be taken into consideration in order to individualize nutritional guidance to dental patients. This course presents a comprehensive program for incorporating nutritional screening and counseling from a registered dietitian, into existing dental practices. Attendees learn the scientific evidence surrounding the impact of traditional eating patterns on the oral cavity and its impact on dental treatment outcomes.
