Class Details & Lesson Plan

Class Details

Class schedule: 1 class per week, for 6 weeks

Number of recipes per class: 2–3

Class components: Each class is divided up into
1) an intro, 2) an historical and nutritional discussion,
3) a cooking lesson, and 4) a time to eat together and reflect.

Tracking success: Using confidential lifestyle and physical health evaluations, instructors and students track their success to make sure that A Taste of African Heritage helps its participants make lasting changes for their health and wellbeing.

Steps to teach this class

Thank you for your interest in teaching Oldways’ A Taste of Heritage cooking programs! Please note that while we ask for credentials, teachers are not required to have a professional degree. A strong interest and passion for teaching the curriculum, and also a willingness to help Oldways monitor success, are the key elements.

Building your familiarity with African Heritage nutrition concepts is a great first step for getting familiar with the course material.

Option 1: Licensing the digital Curriculum

Organizations interested in teaching can license the curriculum on an annual basis will allow the licensee to download a PDF version of the curriculum, the trifold brochure and required entrance/exit surveys for printing.

  1. Standard Single-Site License: For community health centers, SNAP-Ed providers, and other local organizations/small businesses. $300 per year per program ($300 for A Taste of African Heritage, $300 for A Children’s Taste of African Heritage). Contact: [email protected] if you’re interested, to request a contract and invoice, or to learn more.
  2. Multi-Branch License: For larger national organizations, or organizations with multiple branches. Contact: [email protected] to learn more about pricing.
Option 2: Purchasing the printed Curriculum

Alternatively, organizations can purchase the printed teacher’s manual and student handbooks in our webstore with or without a license. If you purchase the curriculum, you do not need to obtain a license. It is an ‘either/or’ situation. Please note however that the purchased printed curriculum may not be printed, published, copied, scanned, or resold; and that you will need to sign an Agreement. The minimum order of student handbooks is 15. Classes are also encouraged to purchase the corresponding Pyramid poster to display in the class as well as the trifold brochures.
