A Children’s Taste of African Heritage is a 7-week cooking and nutrition curriculum for kids ages 8-12 based on healthy, plant-based foods from across the African Diaspora. The program is aligned with Common Core State Standards for grades 3-6 and SHAPE America fitness standards for grades 3-4.
Class schedule: 1 class per week, for 7 weeks
Number of recipes per class: 0–2
Class components: Each class is divided up into 1) an introduction, 2) an historical and nutritional discussion, 3) a cooking lesson and/or sensory activity, and 4) a time to eat together and reflect.
Tracking success: Using confidential lifestyle evaluations, instructors and students track their success.

Thank you for your interest in teaching Oldways’ A Taste of Heritage cooking programs! Please note that while we ask for credentials, teachers are not required to have a professional degree. A strong interest and passion for teaching the curriculum, and also a willingness to help Oldways monitor success, are the key elements.

Download Oldways’ Certificate of Completion for this course. We can also mail the certificate to you after you have confirmed logistical details with us for teaching a class series.
Organizations interested in teaching can license the curriculum on an annual basis will allow the licensee to download a PDF version of the curriculum and required entrance/exit surveys for printing.
Alternatively, organizations can purchase the printed teacher’s manual and student handbooks in our webstore with or without a license. If you purchase the curriculum, you do not need to obtain a license. It is an ‘either/or’ situation. Please note however that the purchased printed curriculum may not be printed, published, copied, scanned, or resold; and that you will need to sign an Agreement. The minimum order of student handbooks is 15. Classes are also encouraged to purchase the corresponding Pyramid poster to display in the class as well as the trifold brochures.
