BOSTON, October, 2014 — Just in time for the New Year and those healthy resolutions, Oldways, a nonprofit food and nutrition education organization, is introducing the second in its Health Through Heritage Cookbook Series, “The Oldways 4-Week Vegetarian & Vegan Diet Menu Plan.” The 80-page, full-color book offers a month’s worth of simple, tempting and affordable vegetarian and vegan breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks.

Each of the 28 days includes easy-to-follow (and delicious) meal ideas and recipes such as Veggie Pizza, Spicy Thai Noodles, and Farmer’s Market Lasagna. The cookbook, written with dietitian Sharon Palmer, is specifically designed to help people discover the basic steps in adopting a nutritionally sound vegetarian or vegan diet and lifestyle and offers tips to support a healthy, balanced approach to preparing delicious food at home. Nutrition information for each meal is included in an easy-to-use chart that follows the recipes at the end of the book.

“Whether once a week or every day, more people want to explore a plant-based diet yet many are intimidated by the thought of preparing vegetarian meals at home,” said Sara Baer-Sinnott, president, Oldways. “The Oldways 4-Week Vegetarian & Vegan Diet Menu Plan makes it easy to experiment with new recipes, allowing enjoyment of delicious foods while consuming fewer calories, leading to better health and wellbeing.”

Hundreds of scientific studies support the benefits of a plant-based diet, including improved health, lower disease risk, weight loss and, according to a significant study of 70,000 Seventh-day Adventists, published online by JAMA, improved longevity.

Based on the rising popularity of plant-based eating, last October, Oldways introduced a newly updated Vegetarian & Vegan Diet Pyramid which highlights the vast variety of delicious, healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, herbs and spices that fit into this eating pattern. This is one of five Oldways pyramids, reflecting healthy cultural models of healthy eating around the world.

The first in Oldways’ Health Through Heritage Cookbook Series, “The Oldways 4-Week Mediterranean Diet Menu Plan,” was introduced in December 2012 and quickly made Amazon.com’s all-time bestselling Mediterranean cookbooks list.

Both cookbooks are sold through Amazon and the Oldways website store for a cost of $10.00.  Bulk discounts are available to individuals/organizations looking to expand their food & nutrition education offerings for clients and/or patients.

In the near future Oldways plans to expand the cookbook line further, with menu plan cookbooks for the traditional Latin American Diet and the African Health and Heritage Diet.
