Italian Anise Cookies

Author:
Alison Clancy

This delightful cookie is a family recipe of Oldways staffer Alison Clancy. As Alison says, "This one was actually made up by my great-grandmother Anastasia Barile, straight off the boat Italian, so you KNOW it’s a good recipe!"

Ingredients:
  • Cookie dough:
  • 6 cups all purpose flower
  • 1/4 lb trans-fat-free shortening
  • 3 eggs
  • 8 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoons anise extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Icing:
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon anise extract
  • Decorative candy sprinkles
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Put flour on a board or table-top and add dry ingredients (sugar, baking powder and salt) and mix well. Then make a well, next put in eggs, shortening, anise extract and milk.
  2. Work into a dough with your hands for 5 minutes, then put dough on one side and cover to keep from drying out. Cover and take small pieces at a time.
  3. Roll out to about 1/3 inch, then cut with a small cookie cutter.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for about 3-4 minutes, taking care to not overcook. Cool completely.
  5. For icing, whisk together milk, sugar, and extract until smooth. Dip each cooled cookied in the frosting, and then top with sprinkles.
