BOSTON, February, 2013 — Oldways, the food and nutrition education nonprofit, today announced a content sharing partnership with Black Health TV.  The partnership leverages Oldways culturally relevant African Heritage & Health resources and delivers them to the Black Health TV community.

Oldways African Heritage & Health nutrition education resources are evidence-based and include healthy lifestyle tools based on the African Heritage Diet Pyramid, a cultural eating model designed to inspire and educate people about this appetizing and affordable healthy eating pattern.  Resources include the African Heritage Diet Pyramid, an African Heritage Diet grocery list and kitchen set-up guide, a food glossary, recipes, health studies and other heritage information.

“Black Health TV’s mission aligns very well with our own,” said Sara Baer-Sinnott, president of Oldways. “Changing habits to embrace health through heritage takes communities working together.  This new partnership helps leverage our existing health resources, reach a broader audience, and make a larger, positive impact to help combat this current health crisis.”

The announcement also coincides with Black History Month and Oldways’ first annual African Heritage & Health Week, an event that commemorates the foods, flavors and healthy cooking techniques that were core to the well-being of African ancestors from Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and the American South.  Scientific studies show that many chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity, now prevalent in African American communities, appear in populations as traditional diets are left behind.  Black History Month is the perfect time to commemorate and explore the healthy culinary side of history.

“African-Americans and all minorities not only need, but deserve accurate, relevant health and nutrition information,” said Dr. Corey Hebert, CEO of Black Health TV.  “The partnership between Black Health TV (www.blackhealthtv.com) and Oldways will insure that all people of color will finally be able to access healthy food choices in a language that they can truly understand.”
