Celebs Put The Mediterranean Diet in the Spotlight

In this month’s issue of Shape, covergirl and Dancing with the Stars host Brooke Burke says, “I’ve tried just about every crazy diet you can imagine. But now I’ve learned what really works for my body.” The article continues: “Brooke and her family follow a Mediterranean diet, which includes lean grilled beef, chicken, fish (she loves salmon), salads, vegetables, and, of course, olive oil.”

Celebrities are trendsetters. Whether it’s a new book, an inventive way to wear fake eyelashes, or this season’s hottest designer, you can usually tell what’s “in” by skimming the most recent issue of your favorite magazine for paparazzi pictures. However, when it comes to the Mediterranean Diet, Oldways got the scoop before anyone else! Take that, Page Six!

For two decades (that’s a century in Hollywood-years), Oldways has been working hard to educate consumers and companies alike about the benefits of going back to the “old ways” of eating. That includes the Mediterranean Diet, which we’ve been promoting with the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid and the Mediterranean Foods Alliance way before Ms. Burke put on her sequined gown for that little celebrity dancing show you may have heard about. I hear it’s doing quite well.

Following the Mediterranean Diet has many benefits. Studies show that eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, beans and herbs and spices can, among other things:

  • Improve brain function
  • Protect you from diabetes
  • Keep away depression
  • Lengthen your life

So what other members of the rich and famous follow the Mediterranean Diet (and I don’t mean taking their private jets and flying to one of the Greek Islands from time to time for dinner)? Just to name a few: Jennifer Garner, Elizabeth Hurley, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Isla Fisher and Heidi Klum have all been linked to the Med way of eating. But despite the star power behind it, the Mediterranean Diet is no new hot trend, or a flash-in-the-pan way to lose weight. It’s a healthy lifestyle, and it’s got staying power. Just like George Clooney, it only gets better with age.

Oh, and if any of the aforementioned stars would like to come mingle with us at the Oldways office sometime, I’m sure I can make time in my schedule. I’ll have my people call your people.
